In a parallel hybrid hydraulic system, the conventional vehicle powertrain is supplemented by the addition of the hybrid hydraulic system.

The hybrid hydraulic system is best suited for vehicles that operate in stop-and-go duty cycles, including refuse and buses, where fuel economy improvements between 20 and 30 percent are typical.

Eaton plans to commercialize its HLA system in refuse trucks in 2009. Other applications will soon follow.

Eaton uses variable displacement radial ball technology for their pump products, and fixed displacement radial ball or Geroler technology for motors.
